Inner Tube Sheet

My bachelor assignment I did in collaboration with at the company Het Nieuwe Logisch / The Bin. For them, I designed a new production method to turn bicycle inner tubes into a sheet material. Their current method was time consuming and led to an uneven sheet. I experimented with different production methods and created different sheet possibilities. The final design consists of a combination of uncut tubes and opened tubes sewn together. This resulted in a more sturdy and refined material.
During this assignment I learned to work individually, and on top of that I improved my sewing skills.

Analysis

The first step of improving the production method for turning bicycle inner tubes into a sheet material, was analysing the current method and application of the material.

Ideation

Next, I tested different production methods.

Finalisation

The final production method includes instructions on how to clean, cut and sew the inner tubes into a sheet

Below: Final sheet material

Application

The new sheet was tested in both a fanny pack and a travel bag. The comparison slider shows on the left the old sheet applied to these bags and on the right my newly designed sheet.
